This is a 1-day course intended for newer Engineering Techs, concentrating on underground design.

 

The content of the course session will include, but not limited to:
 Plant location (appropriate places and places to avoid)
 Types of equipment
o Transformers
o Primary and Secondary Cables
o Switching Kiosks
o Fault Indicators
 Equipment issues:
o Corrosion of equipment
o Drainage of vaults/ducts
 CSA considerations
 Subdivision / commercial designs
 Loop designs
 Trenches and clearances
 Working clearances
 Municipal requirements (easements, excavating in the vicinity)
 Transformer loading/sizing
 Conductor sizing (amperage and voltage drop)
 Reliability vs cost considerations in design
 Cable testing, different methods of testing
 High voltage acceptance testing (cables, transformers etc) (NETA Standards)
 Replacement of existing UG structures
 Fault current
 Pulling calculator
 Voltage drop calculations
 What’s in the USF Section12 – how to apply
 Transitioning from OH to UG using USF Risers (Section 4) and Metering (Section 14)
 UG protection and coordination
